Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is a role playing game developed by tri-Crescendo and Monolith Soft and published by Namco for Nintendo's GameCube console. Besides the long subtitle, the most notable feature of Baten Kaitos is the combat system which involves the use of special cards known as Magnus. The story revolves around a young man Kalas and his companion Xelha who live in a kingdom above the clouds. The player doesn't play directly as the protagonists but instead takes on the role of a Guardian Spirit who guides Kalas. The game received decent reviews netting an average of 81.4% as reported on Game Rankings. Baten Kaitos was released on December 5, 2003 in Japan and on November 16, 2004 in North America. The European & Australian versions were released a year later. A prequel, titled Baten Kaitos Origins was released in 2006.
