Phantasy Star Universe, called Fantashi Suta Yunibasu in Japan, commony referred to as PSU for short, is a hack-and-slash style action RPG by Sega's Sonic Team. The game has both a single player aspect and an online persistent world MMO like component which can be enjoyed by thousands of people online simultaneously. Even though Phantasy Star Universe has a different name than the Phantasy Star Online game's, the overall gameplay of both games are incredibly similar. Phantasy Star Universe's main character is Ethan Waber and the game follows his story as he tries to defeat the evil winged robot Magashi who belongs to a mysterious organization known as the Endrum Collective. Magashi serves as the primary antagonist throughout the entire game. Phantasy Star Universe was received only fairly well, as it earned a 65% from Game Rankings. The game's commercial success though led to the development of an 'expansion pack' dubbed Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus. The game was released in Japan on August 31st, 2006, in North America on October 24th, 2006 and in Europe on November 24th, 2006.
