Players take control of Harry Mason as he makes his way through the dilapidated, demon-infested town of Silent Hill as he tries to find his daughter Cheryl. There is very little light in silent hill, seeing as it seems to be night time and there is thick fog everywhere. Players are given a small flash light at the start of the game, but it doesn't do very well, and so much of the 'horror' element of the game is from being attacked  by the unknown. Many times you will be wandering around in the dark with only the noise of monsters to alert you to their presence.  The game was released on January 31st, 1999 in the United States and did so well that it spawned multiple sequels and a feature film.
