Resident Evil, called Biohazard in Japan, is a survival horror game and is the first title in the now critically acclaimed Resident Evil franchise. Resident Evil was considered a revolutionary game for its time as it was one of the first to be dubbed a 'survival horror' game and helped grow the genre. Many game critics hail the game as one of the most influential video games of all time and praise the game for its unique gameplay. Resident Evil is set in a fictional small Midwestern town called Raccoon City where numerous violent murders have taken place. The local authorities dispatched the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS) Bravo team to investigate. Resident Evil was very well received as it earned an impressive 90% on GameRankings. Due to the enormous success of the franchise, Resident Evil was remade for the GameCube in 2002 and for the Nintendo DS in 2006. Since release the game was ported to numerous platforms, but it was originally released on the Playstation. Resident Evil was released in Japan on March 22, 1996, in North America on March 30th, 1996 and in Europe on August 1st.
