Super Metroid is the third game in the Metroid series of action-adventure video games starring Samus Aran. Most of the game takes place on the planet of Zebes and requires the player to collect power-ups while searching for a Metroid stolen by the leader of the Space Pirates, Ridley. Super Metroid added several new abilities to the series including the 'Moon Walk' which allows players to shoot while moving backwards. The game was released on March 19, 1994 in Japan, and April 18 1004 in North America. It was well received with an average score of 95.79% on GameRankings. While it didn't sell well initially, the positive reception kept the game on gamer's radars. In 2007 Super Metroid was released for the Virtual Console.
